How to turn Google’s “Files” app into a full-fledged file manager “Android :: Gadget Hacks

As the files on our devices become more and more important over the years, the need to keep things organized continues to increase. The longer your device, the messier the internal storage can become. Having a file manager would be extremely helpful in this situation. You can also rearrange the folder structure, just like you would on a desktop computer.

Luckily for us, Google has included the “Files” app by default with a good majority of devices now as part of their core Google apps. This means that there is no need to download an additional app from the play store to get the basic functionality of the file manager because it is built-in. Not to be confused with Google’s “Files Go” app also, the standard “Files” app is where you go to view your downloaded files.

The Files app is great on its own, letting you browse your videos, images, audio files, and documents at a glance with the push of a button. By pressing any of the buttons, the selected files will automatically appear in front of you as if by magic without any guesswork. However, you can easily go for a full-fledged file manager if you want even more control over your internal storage.

Turning the Files app into a file manager is pretty straightforward. Open the Files app, tap the three-dot menu at the top right, then tap the “Show internal storage” option. You can now tap the hamburger menu icon on the left and you will see your device name along with how much storage you have.

Tapping on your device’s name will take you to the root of your internal storage, which will reveal exactly what’s on your phone. Just like a desktop computer, you can create new folders, delete or rename files, compress for easy sharing, and move items as needed. This is quite useful, especially since it allows you to make more advanced changes to your storage that was not available by default.
