Mi File Manager vs Solid Explorer: File Explorer Comparison

Smartphones running Android now have a native file explorer app that is pretty straightforward. You explore the files and folders on your device, whether in internal storage or external storage i.e. memory card.

Usually native file explorers are straightforward and most people are happy at first. Once you start storing media files, you find that Native File Explorer lacks a few features that you would want. As a result, people are switching to third-party exploration apps. One of these applications is Solid Explorer.

Ever since Xiaomi released Mi File Manager on the Play Store, almost everyone has been wondering if it’s worth choosing it over other exploration apps. That’s why we had to compare the two file manager apps: Mi File Manager and Solid Explorer.

Let’s get started.

User interface

The user interface of the two apps is different but with some fortuitous similarities. When you launch Solid Explorer, you will be greeted with a clear folder layout. A search option can be found at the top, the navigation drawer on the left which houses bookmarks, hidden folders, and collections.

In contrast, in the case of Mi File Manager, the first screen houses your recent files. Swipe left on the home screen to access folders. If you have used ES File Explorer before, this app will remind you because the design is similar. When you access the storage section, the storage capacity will be displayed at the top, making it easily accessible.

Two-panel navigation

Solid Explorer comes with a cool feature where you get two browser panels. This is activated automatically if you rotate the phone or if it has a large screen – a tablet. The two panels are independent of each other. You can move data between these panels and perform actions on them independently. Mi File Manager does not support this.

Direct access to important files

Segregation of files according to their type plays an essential role in any file explorer. While both apps separate data into categories like Pictures, Videos, Documents, Music, etc. However, Mi File Manager places most of them on the home screen itself. This is the first thing you will notice when you launch the app. Plus, categories aren’t just limited to basic files, and you get other folders like Archives, Screenshots, Ringtones, and more.

In Solid Explorer, the navigation drawer contains these folders on the left. Besides, you get a limited collection of folders including recent files, photos, music, videos, documents, and apps.

Sort and display mode

Both apps allow you to sort your files and folders based on various parameters such as name, date, size and type. However, Solid Explorer provides an additional parameter where you can choose the sort mode for a specific folder only. The setting will not apply to the rest of the folders.

When it comes to viewing files, Mi File Manager only offers two options: List view and Grid view. On the other hand, Solid Explorer allows you to view files in Gallery and Compact modes in addition to List and Grid modes.

LAN, FTP and cloud storage

Whether you want to connect your PCs over a local network, access files stored on any cloud server such as DropBox, Google Drive, or set up an FTP and SMB server, Solid Explorer takes care of all the functions. On the other hand, Mi Explorer only supports FTP by using the FTP functionality of its Mi Drop app.

Prices and announcements

Mi File Manager is a free app and comes preinstalled on Mi devices. You can also download it from the Google Play Store and install it. Although the app is free, it is full of annoying ads. So, good luck dealing with this.

Solid Explorer comes with a 14 day trial version. After that you have to buy the premium version which you just need to shell out $ 1.99. This is a one-time payment that gives you access to all the features of Solid Explorer. Fortunately, there are no ads in the trial version or the premium version.

Which one to use?

Mi File Manager is a basic file explorer which has all the necessary functions. If you don’t need the extra functions available in Solid Explorer, Mi Manager is a good choice. The only downside is its ads.

But if you want something more, Solid Explorer is your go-to app. It allows you to connect devices on the same network and saves you from having to download other cloud apps. It also allows you to change the theme of the app and offers lots of customization options. All of these features come at a price, however.

I suggest you download Solid Explorer and try it for 14 days. If you like the app, great. If you don’t, you can still stay with Mi File Manager or check ES File Explorer or Google Files Go.
